Arthroscopy Surgery can be performed

What is the procedure like?

Arthroscopy is an outpatient procedure, which means the patient can go home the same day of the surgery. It is performed under either general or local anesthesia depending on the joint being treated. The surgery takes 30-60 minutes depending on the area.

Small incisions are made through which the surgeon inserts a special pencil-thin instrument, called fiberoptic arthroscope. The fiberoptic arthroscopies 5mm in diameter and is mounted with a camera lens and a light source. With the help of this scope, the surgeon can see inside the joint through the images projected on a screen. The surgeon then fills the joint with sterile fluid that helps in widening it for the surgeon to see more easily.

After the analysis, the surgeon will be able to decide on the treatment and the type of surgery required. If the surgery is required, the surgeon will insert special tools through other incisions to cut, shave, grasp and anchor stitches into the bone.

If the surgeon decides on a more traditional approach, he may perform an open surgery to treat the problem along with your arthroscopic surgery.

After the surgery, the incisions are closed using a special tape or stitches.
