Hip Replacement Surgery

Having pain in your hip joint?

Are you having problem with pain in your hip joint? Are you feeling that your movement is restricted? Are you in pain due to swelling and stiffness?
Hip joint pain can be caused to several reasons. It could be due to degeneration of cartilage in the joint (or degenerative changes in the joint cartilage) that causes osteoarthritis or developmental conditions, that occur when a newborn baby has a dislocated hip or chronic conditions and infections. It may result in cartilage to split and become brittle. The situation is worsened when the pieces of the cartilage break off in the hip joint. If the cartilage wears down even more, it may fail to provide cushioning to the hip joint causing more pain and inflammation.

At Chanddni Hospital, we get to the core of the problem and then suggest the best suitable treatment for our patients. In the first consultation, we make notes of all your symptoms and may suggest a few tests if required to better understand the problem. On the basis of physical examination and test results, we device a best treatment plan for our patients.

What We Suggest

Lifestyle Modification

Simple lifestyle modifications can help in relieving hip joint pain. It is best to avoid high impact exercises and wear appropriate footwear to maintain the correct posture while walking or playing sports or exercising. It is good to consult a physical therapist who can guide you for simple lifestyle modifications and simple stretching exercises which can help in some cases. Physical therapy also helps you to strengthen your muscles and enhances the joint stability.

Medications may help

For some patients, we feel that condition may be revived without surgery. For them we suggest pain medication such as Acetaminophen Ibuprofen, and Naproxen.
Our first solution is always lifestyle modification and physical therapy. Only then if required we resort to medications or surgery.

Do I need a surgery?

Surgery is not always the answer! At Chanddni Hospital, we first examine your condition and suggest simple lifestyle modifications and physical therapy to ease out the pain. Only patients who can not be treated with non-surgical methods are guided about the surgery. At Chanddni Hospital, we are specialized in hip replacement surgery, arthroscopic surgery to treat ligaments, meniscus, cartilage and problems of the patella. Patients with previously failed surgeries or with revision surgeries, or ones with multiple ligaments damage, or ones requiring re-alignment surgeries are also being treated at Chanddni Hospital.
Hip replacement surgery is performed to remove a diseases cartilage and bone of the hip joint and replace it with an artificial joint known as prosthesis. This prosthesis is usually made from metal and plastic components. The doctor often prescribes hip replacement surgery when all other non-surgical treatments such as medications and physical therapies have failed to provide relief from the pain.
Standard Hip replacement surgery is performed under a general anaesthesia. The normal hip joint is a ball and socket joint (a cup-shaped bone of the pelvis, also known as acetabulum). The ball is the head of the thighbone, also known as femur. The surgeon makes an incision of about 8-10 inch along the side of the hip. This allows the doctor to move the muscle connected to the thighbone from the top to further expose the hip joint. The ball and socket portion of the hip joint is then removed and replaced with a metallic artificial ball and stem (prosthesis). After inserting the prosthesis into the central core of the femur, it is fixed with bony cement called methyl methacrylate. The surgeon uses a drain to help drain any fluids during the procedure. The muscle is then reattached and the incision is closed.
Alternatively, a “cementless” prosthesis with microscopic pores can be used that allows bony ingrowth from the normal femur into the prosthesis stem. This method is preferred in case of younger patients.
In recent years, doctors have starting using minimally invasive techniques over standard techniques. With minimally invasive technique, the surgeon makes 1-2 incisions of 2-5 inches and then follows the same procedure as done in a standard approach. With this new approach, since the incisions are small, it lessens the blood loss, reduces the scar appearance and shortens the recovery after the surgery.
If opting for minimally invasive approach, make sure the doctor is highly skilled. Team of expert doctors at Channdni Hospital, Kota is highly skilled to perform minimally invasive hip replacement surgery and has successfully been practicing the technique for years.
In some cases, blood transfusion may be required to compensate for the blood loss during the surgery.
The Procedure of Hip Replacement Surgery
Recovery after Hip Replacement Surgery
Most patients get discharged within 4-6 days post operatively. A wedge-shaped cushion may be used between your legs to help the new hip joint settle in place. A physical therapist will be assigned to you from the 2nd day of the surgery. In a few days you will be able to walk using a walker, a cane or crutches. It is recommended to continue physical therapy for couple of months after the surgery.
The physical therapist will guide you for the do’s and don’ts for performing your daily activities. Follow the guidelines carefully to avoid any complications like dislocating your newly replaced hip joint, in which case, you may require another surgery. The new replaced joint is designed for daily routine activities and heavy activities and certain sports must be avoided. It is also recommended to limit the use of stairs until you heal completely.
